“I’m a Slave 4 U” parts ways with Spears’s previous singles in a number of ways. It was written and produced by The Neptunes. The song was originally intended for Janet Jackson, who found the song to be too sultry for her vocals and unfit for her album, so The Neptunes offered it to Spears. Many therefore believe it symbolized a change in Spears’s genre of music. Spears said of the song, “It’s talking about me just wanting to go out and forget who I am and dance and have a good time. That’s kinda where I am now right now. I love working, but at the same time, I love having a good time.” Still, it was considered as one of Spears’s signature songs due to the fact that it was a transitional single in her career.

“I’m a Slave 4 U” was later modified as a medley with another Spears song called “Boys (The Co-Ed Remix)” and a dance break mix within “I’m A Slave 4 U” with vocals from Busta Rhymes’ song “Light Your Ass On Fire.” This unreleased medley was used widely in her special performances during the promotion of her succeeding album although she used the album version for the Onyx Hotel Tour. Another medley was also produced using the “Light Your Ass on Fire” remix and the song “…Baby One More Time for Spears’s performance at the 2003 NFL Kickoff.

“I’m a Slave 4 U” is also featured on the video game Boogie, along with another hit single by Spears, “Oops!…I Did It Again”.

Reviews were generally favorable. According to Metacritic, which combines reviews from the nations top critics, the album has a 64% approval rating from critics.

The Sun newspaper in the U.K. had an exclusive preview of the album and were the first ones to post the world’s first reviews of Circus. Of the track, “If U Seek Amy”, “It’s a great track. A stomping robo pop number with clattering kettle drums and Brit being quite frank about the opinion she holds of herself”. “Kill the Lights” was described as “a brilliant disco banger”. The reviewer expressed the opinion that the album had similarities to Madonna’s Hard Candy. According to Nick Levine of Digital Spy, it has many similarities to her last studio album, although she sounds more confident and there is less reliance on the vocoder. “Out From Under” was described as “a teary eyed ballad…that’s really quite lovely”. Billboard Magazine gave a positive review of “Circus.” It states “From the synthy open of “Womanizer” to the regretful ache spurring “Blur,” “Circus” gives Brit pop a whole new meaning” and goes on to say “she is in a class of her own.” Rolling Stone’s Caryn Ganz says he was blown away with Britney’s new work and that Toxic producers Bloodshy & Avant hit pay dirt again with the melodic, glowing “Unusual You.” The Max Martin-produced “If U Seek Amy” is a saucy, swinging standout, and the photographer-taunting stomper “Kill the Lights” recalls the synth crush of 2007’s Blackout and then he went on to credit songs “Blur”, “My Baby”, “Mmm Papi”, and “Out From Under,” calling it Spears best ballad since I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.

However, The Hartford Courant did not feel that it was her best performance, writing “It’s too bad the best songs here don’t really match up with her best performances, but that’s nothing new for Spears.” Slant Magazine gave an unfavorable review as well, writing that Circus “doesn’t quite feel like a comeback”, while The Guardian felt that the album was “substantially less edgy and exciting than its predecessor.” Allmusic was in a similar agreement with The Guardian, writing that the album “never feels as sleek or addictive as its predecessor.”

Circus is the sixth studio album by American pop singer Britney Spears. Jive Records, in collaboration with Zomba Label Group and Sony Music Entertainment, released it on November 28, 2008. Having moved over 505,000 copies in the United States in its first week, Circus debuted on the Billboard 200 at number one, making it Spears’s fifth number-one album. The feat made Spears the only act in Nielsen SoundScan history to have four albums debut with 500,000 or more copies sold.

The first single, “Womanizer”, became Spears’s first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 since her debut “…Baby One More Time”, almost 10 years prior. The second single, the title track of the album, “Circus”, debuted at number three on the Hot 100 chart. Circus is so far proving to be her most successful album, having it be her only album to have two singles chart in the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The controversial music video for Everytime was directed by David LaChapelle. Vanessa Grigoriadis reported in “The Tragedy of Britney Spears” (2008), her cover story for Rolling Stone, that “Her concept was to die in an overflowing bathtub with pills and booze strewn around, and get reincarnated as a baby. There were demons that she was battling, and she wanted everyone to know. Jive insisted on a different method of death, so she ran away from the paparazzi before drowning in the tub. Britney was compliant on the first day of the shoot, but on the second, she refused to leave her hotel room. “Finally, Britney agreed to do it, but first she said, ‘I need three Red Bulls, and call my doctor,’” says a friend.”

The video begins with Spears and her boyfriend (Stephen Dorff) in a limo. They arrive at a building where the paparazzi are awaiting. Spears is hit in the head with a camera, but keeps walking. When in the lobby, Spear’s boyfriend begins throwing some magazines around and pushing photographers. Spears and her beau are escorted out of the room and are taken into hallways which lead them to her room. They have a fight in which her boyfriend throws a vase at the wall. He leaves and Spears begins filling her bathtub and removing her clothes. When she’s in the tub, she realizes she’s bleeding from the head, suffering a concussion from when she was hit in the head with a paparazzo’s cameras. She loses conciousness in the tub. Later, her beau finds her unconscious in her tub and calls rescue. Unconscious, Spears follows her body to the hospital, not before being shown running towards the camera away from a bright light—a scene often associated with the transition into afterlife. Near the end of the video, Spears is seen running away from the camera and towards the bright light–symbolizing a fear of staying on Earth and an embracement of death. Following these scenes, Spears is shown rising from underwater in the bathtub and resting her head and smiling. This implies that she was imagining the entire scenario and never became unconscious to begin with. This was added to perhaps lessen the severity and controversy of the explicit content of the video.

The video was at number one on MTV’s Total Request Live countdown for six days, and it also reached number three on both VH1’s Top 20 Countdown and MuchMusic’s Countdown.

The video was #2 on MuchMusic’s 50 most controversial videos for the blood, partial nudity, and graphic scenes.

It was premiered in the U.K. on the MTV show trl.

In the bath scene, Spears is seen wearing the red string worn by members of the Kabbalah Centre. This comes months after Spears was introduced to Kabbalah by Madonna. The red string was often mistaken for bloody wrists in a suicide attempt.

On October 15, 2008, the song made a record jump from ninety-six to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, breaking the record set by T.I.’s “Live Your Life”, which had jumped from number eighty to number one the week before.[3] It also garnered first-week download sales of 286,000, the biggest opening-week tally by a female artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital downloads in 2003, topping Mariah Carey’s take for “Touch My Body” by just over 200 units.[4] During a live interview with New York’s Z100, Spears talked about the song quoting: “It’s basically saying, ‘We know what you’re up to.’ It’s about guys cheating on girls… it’s a girl anthem. That’s why I like it.”
